Canmore Kananaskis Community Tourism Strategic Plan and DMO Re-establishment

Our team worked with Tourism Canmore Kananaskis (TCK) to develop a Community Tourism Strategy and re-establish the organization at the DMO for Canmore Kananaskis. Important components of the strategic planning process included robust stakeholder consultation, detailed destination analysis, tourism service delivery review, funding model analysis, governance structure analysis, marketing strategy development and a strategic partnership analysis.  In addition to developing the strategy, we also developed a business plan, marketing strategies, operational plan, and other supporting documents for TCK.

Project Highlights

UNANIMOUS SUPPORT

The Tourism Canmore Kananaskis Board and Town of Canmore Council unanimously supported the document in May 2019. This was a watershed moment for the community.

COMMITMENT TO ACTION

Since approving the strategy, TCK, the Town of Canmore and industry stakeholders have taken action to implement the recommendations. A Board with broad industry representation is being established, multiple industry sessions have been held, and a bridging document describing how the key partners will work together is being developed by the Town of Canmore.

EXTENSIVE STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION

Extensive stakeholder consultation was conducted to support the project. Engagement activities included three facilitated meetings to gather input from stakeholders, an online survey to collect input from the public and local businesses, and 30 one-on-one interviews with local businesses, regional partners and comparative organizations.

DETAILED IMPLEMENTATION PLANNING

Included in the strategy was a detailed plan for implementation that includes 118 action items grouped into 45 separate initiatives.
